Careers in the film industry can span directing, producing, editing, writing, and more. There are no specific degree requirements for the field. Aspiring filmmakers, however, must have a strong sense of motivation and perseverance to break into the industry.
Many prospective filmmakers choose to pursue a two- or four-year degree program in film, and there are a wide variety of programs throughout the country to choose from. At the Art Institute of Atlanta, for example, students can earn a bachelor of arts degree in digital media production or an associate of arts degree in video production.
The University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts offers a variety of bachelor and master of fine arts degree programs, including film, video, and computer animation; film and television production; writing for screen and television; and producing.
Short-term programs are also widely available for those not interested in a degree program. New York Film Academy offers one-year intensive training programs in filmmaking, producing, screenwriting, and 3D animation. Pittsburgh Filmmakers offers courses that include photographic and motion principles, film production, and video production.
Most programs offer students the chance to work on their own films, providing opportunities for students to develop portfolios that become key during a job search.
