LA Film SchoolCompetition for a career in film is keen, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and experience is often the key to getting started. But how, as a novice, do you gain that practical experience? A growing number of schools are offering intense, immersive degrees in film that offer hands-on training and tools.

The Los Angeles Film School, which opened in Hollywood in 1999, has recently thrown its hat in the degree ring with its first degree program -- the Associate of Science Degree in Film. The school says the degree, which would typically account for two years of study at a traditional college, can be completed through 12 months of immersive study, and is open to monthly enrollment.

The Associate's degree, building on the success of the school's prior Immersion Certificate Program, focuses on the intertwining elements of the arts, technology, and business. Students will be actively involved in learning skills in all major disciplines of filmmaking, including directing, screenwriting, producing, cinematography, art direction, production, and post-production.

"The introduction of our very first degree program puts The Los Angeles Film School on the world map for quality filmmaking education," says Diana Derycz-Kessler, chief executive officer for the school. "It is one of many strides our school is taking to become an even stronger academic center for aspiring filmmakers."

The school is serious in its quest to be considered a choice for those seeking more than just a workshop or certificate. Along with the new degree, the school has expanded its Hollywood campus with new labs, studios, and classroooms. A highlight of the expansion is a new Hollywood set -- a two-story, 3,000-square foot Victorian house that uses age-old industry techniques such as a green screen, painted backgrounds, and a back-lit illuminated trans-light.
